College Basketball Rankings: Coaches Poll Top 25 updated after Week 5
The USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll has been refreshed following the fifth week of the season. Massive showdowns resulted in fascinating movement throughout the Top 25.
Purdue’s fall and Iowa State’s commanding rise punctuated an interesting week throughout the sport. With several bluebloods staying unbeaten and marquee matchups on deck for this coming week, the national picture is ever-changing as December heats up.
The action is picking up across the country, and the Coaches Poll Top 25 is certain to see plenty of movement as the season unfolds. For now, here’s how things stack up after Week 5. This week’s updated rankings are below.
1. Michigan (+1)
Michigan kept its unbeaten season rolling with a dominant 51-point win over Rutgers. The Wolverines face a challenging week ahead against Villanova and Maryland as they try to extend their perfect 8–0 start.
Their balance and physicality have been defining traits early on. Senior forward Yaxel Lendeborg has emerged as the star, averaging 15.8 points and 7.6 rebounds.
2. Arizona (+1)

Arizona made a statement last week with a 97–68 blowout of No. 20 Auburn, solidifying itself as one of the nation’s elite. The Wildcats will put their undefeated record to the test against No. 12 Alabama in a marquee matchup.
At 8–0, they continue to showcase high-end scoring and versatility. Freshman phenom Koa Peat leads the way with 15.9 points per game.
3. Duke (+1)
Duke remained perfect after narrow wins over Florida and Michigan State, showing poise in close-game situations. The Blue Devils, now 10–0, get a rare break before returning to action against Lipscomb on Dec. 16.
Their defense and rebounding continue to set them apart, among other things. Freshman sensation Cameron Boozer has been nearly unstoppable, averaging 23.0 points and 9.9 boards.
4. Iowa State (+5)
Few teams in the country had a better week than Iowa State, which dropped 132 points on Alcorn State before stunning No. 1 Purdue on the road. The Cyclones’ 9–0 start has them surging into national prominence.
A rivalry game against Iowa looms Thursday before a Sunday meeting with Eastern Illinois. Junior forward Milan Momcilovic leads the undefeated squad at 18.3 points per game.
5. UConn

UConn added two more wins to its résumé, edging Kansas before rolling past East Texas A&M. The Huskies sit at 8–1 heading into a pivotal week featuring matchups with Florida and Texas.
Their depth and physical style remain hallmarks of the program. Junior guard Solo Ball leads the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game.
6. Purdue (-5)
Purdue secured a win over Rutgers, but was handed its first loss of the season in a lopsided 81–58 defeat at Iowa State. This week presents another test as the Boilermakers prepare for Minnesota before a top-tier showdown with Marquette.

At 8–1, Purdue remains firmly in national contention despite the stumble. Senior guard Fletcher Loyer continues to pace the offense with 14.4 points per game.
7. Gonzaga (+4)
Gonzaga delivered two dominant performances, crushing No. 18 Kentucky and rolling past North Florida. The Bulldogs are 9–1 and look every bit like a national title contender.
UCLA visits Spokane this weekend in a high-profile showdown. Senior forward Graham Ike leads a balanced roster with 16.4 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
8. Houston (-1)

Houston secured a solid 82–67 win over Florida State to improve to 8–1 on the season. The Cougars now prepare for matchups with Jackson State and New Orleans as they aim to keep building momentum.
Their defense remains strong and among the best in the country. Senior guard Emmanuel Sharp continues to shine with 17.6 points per game.
9. Michigan State (-1)
Michigan State delivered a convincing win over Iowa before dropping a tight game to Duke. Sitting at 8–1, the Spartans will enter their matchup with Penn State looking to regain rhythm.
Their physical interior play continues to be a strength. Senior forward Jaxon Kohler anchors the effort with 14.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game.
10. BYU
BYU cruised to a 31-point win over California Baptist to move to 7–1 on the season. The Cougars now face Clemson and UC Riverside as they look to continue their hot start.
Their uptempo style has carried them early in the year. Freshman standout AJ Dybantsa has been terrific, averaging 19.4 points and 6.3 rebounds.
