Colorado athletic director Rick George releases statement sticking behind Karl Dorrell

Colorado’s loss Saturday to Minnesota has the Buffaloes at 0-3 to start the 2022 season. That leaves Karl Dorrell with an 8-13 record in his three seasons in Boulder. While many are ready to see a change, that’s not the direction Colorado AD Rick George is going in yet.
In a statement he released this evening, George backed Dorrell in the football program even through the struggles. For now, the only thing his eyes are set on is their next game against UCLA.
It’s not just that the Buffaloes are 0-3. It’s that they haven’t been competitive in the trio of losses either. They lost to TCU by 25, Air Force by 31, and the Gophers this weekend by 42. That’s an average margin of loss of 32.7 points per game by a Pac-12 team.
It may not be what some want to hear, but George is sticking with Dorrell for the time being. With a game against the Bruins next on the slate, all they can do is hope to get conference play started on a high note.

Dorrell amongst Simonton’s ‘Coaching Calamities of the Week’
On3’s Jesse Simonton listed Dorrell amongst the coaches who had the worst weekends in his ‘Sunday Superlatives’ for Week 3. This came before George’s decision to retain Dorrell as Buffalo heads into Pac-12 player. In the piece, he highlighted Dorrell’s optimism after the historic blowout as something that only made the loss that much worse.
“As for the Buffs, they lost their third-straight game by at least 25 points (a first in school history) with a 49-7 loss to Minnesota,” said Simonton. “Dorell has now lost 11 of his last 14 games and afterward said, ‘I feel good about playing the game. We’re just not very good at really playing it effectively and proficiently.’”
