Love them or hate them, Colorado has all eyes on them in the spotlight.

On Sunday, the Buffaloes tweeted the announced peak viewership of their opener against North Dakota State on Thursday with it being 5.6 million on ESPN. They then captioned it with the term of ‘irrelevant’ – a reference to a recent adjective that Paul Finebaum described them as amongst other criticisms.

Per ESPN, Colorado averaged 4.8 million viewers with that peak reaching the 5.6 million on Thursday.

This isn’t the first time that someone has made this reference since then either. Robert Griffin III also did so in saying the Buffaloes “apparently” are “relevant”.

This also isn’t the first response by Colorado back to Finebaum. Sanders himself addressed it last week as well by wondering how they could be irrelevant if they have his attention like everyone else’s.

“He’s talking about us,” Sanders said. “How can we be irrelevant and you’re talking about me? Every time I turn around, somebody’s sending me a quote that you’re talking about me…The thing about a fan, you’ve got to understand. A fan only blows when you’re hot. A fan only blows when we’re hot. So we must be hot.”

“I know what he’s doing and I’m proud of him that he’s smart enough to understand that this generation and this thought process and the way we communicate on sports. Tt’s different. And he’s a dying breed. So what does he have to do to stay and keep up with this change? ‘Oh, I’ve got to go find that big bad wolf and talk about it’. So now, I keep my relevancy. It’s cool. But I’m not gonna help you. I’m not gonna add to you. I’m not even gonna respond because that’s what you want. Yeah, you just want me to respond. I don’t do that. I’m not gonna help you come up.”

Again, whether you like them or not, fans watch Coach Prime and the Buffaloes nonetheless. Based on that alone, they certainly don’t lack relevance these days.

Colorado vs. North Dakota State opener averages 4.8 million viewers on ESPN

Last season, Colorado led the television ratings charge in college football. The Buffaloes played in three of the most-watched games in 2023 as Deion Sanders’ tenure got underway.

Thursday night this week got year two of Coach Prime’s time there started and it came down to the final possession. Ultimately, Colorado came away with the win over North Dakota State – and it was a big night for ESPN

Colorado’s thrilling victory averaged 4.8 million viewers, ESPN announced on Friday night. That made it the most-watched Thursday opener since 2017 and saw a 49% increase from last year’s game in that slot between Florida and Utah that averaged 3.19 million viewers.
