A controversial no-call led to a crucial interception in Saturday’s contest between Iowa State and Colorado. The play occurred early in the fourth quarter with the Cyclones in the red zone and close to scoring a touchdown that would have given them the lead.

Defensive back Ivan Yates clearly looked to wrap up ISU tight end Benjamin Brahmer and drag him to the ground. That allowed for Tawfiq Byard to slip in for the interception and keep the Buffaloes on top. You can check out the play for yourself below.

Iowa State trailed 21-17 at the time of the play. Colorado was not able to score on the ensuing drive and gave the ball back to the Cyclones, who would go on to turn it over on downs.

The Iowa State defense couldn’t hold the Buffaloes without any more points much longer, as they surrendered a field goal on the next drive to make it a 24-17 Colorado advantage. The Cyclones went three-and-out on the drive after that and never got the ball back, falling by that same score.

The pass interference no-call will loom large in this game, as who knows whether Iowa State would have been able to score had it gon differently. Of course, it still had plenty more opportunities after that and failed to take advantage of them as well.

That interception was the only one all game for Cyclones quarterback Rocco Becht. He finished 18-of-33 passing for 205 yards and did not score a touchdown.

The loss is the second straight for Iowa State (5-2, 2-2 Big 12), which dropped its first game of the season last week on the road against Cincinnati. They continue to fall down the conference standings after at one point looking like a contender to reach the championship game.

As for Colorado, this snaps a two-game losing streak as the Buffaloes (3-4, 1-3) finally have their first conference win. They got there behind the play of quarterback Kaidon Salter, who was 16-of-25 passing for 255 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Colorado has a bye next week and will hope the performance from Saturday can carry over into their next contest against Utah on Oct. 25.

Iowa State will look to correct its issues and get back in the win column. It also has a bye next week before taking on BYU on Oct. 25.
