There was a controversial targeting sequence between SMU and Baylor Saturday, late in the game. SMU QB Kevin Jennings slid down and was hit in the area of his head.

Initially, officials called a targeting on the Bears. However, after review anyway, they reversed the call and SMU did not get into automatic field goal range.

To avoid a 10 second runoff, SMU called a timeout. The Mustangs tried to get into better field goal range, but had to settle for a 58-yard attempt. Kicker Collin Rogers‘ kick was wide right and the game went to overtime. The controversial sequence can be seen below.

As you can see, defensive back Devyn Bobby went in for the hit as Jennings slid. The referees concluded it was more incidental than anything. If there was a targeting call, it would’ve been a much more manageable field goal.

SMU falls in overtime to Baylor, non-targeting call to blame?

After holding a 14-point lead, the Mustangs were left scratching their heads. But the fans in attendance got some free football.

In the first overtime, the teams traded touchdowns, tied 45-45 going into the second OT period. SMU had a chance to take the lead, but Rogers missed his second straight field goal, giving the ball back to Baylor.

What might have been for SMU? Baylor ended up winning its 14th straight game against the Mustangs as Connor Hawkins nailed a game-winning field goal, giving the Bears a 48-45 victory.

Moving forward, Baylor will take on Samford next Saturday at home at 12:00 p.m. ET. As far as SMU is concerned, the Mustangs will hit the road the same day for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff against Missouri State.
