Dan Lanning clapped back after the recent comments from Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy regarding Oregon quarterback Dante Moore and the team’s NIL budget. With the Ducks and Cowboys set to play this weekend, Gundy claimed in a recent radio appearance that Oregon would have to pay “a lot of money” to keep Moore beyond this season.

Lanning was asked about the comments in a recent press conference and took the opportunity to compare NIL at Oregon and Oklahoma State. He seemed to insinuate that the Cowboys were not as invested in winning as the Ducks are.

“It sounds like there is (a difference in our programs) listening to him talk,” Lanning said. “I got a ton of respect for coach Gundy. Ultimately, how blessed are we to be in a place that’s invested in winning? If you wanna be a top 10 team in college football, you better be invested in winning. We spend to win. Some people save to have an excuse for why they don’t.”

Gundy took aim at Oregon on his radio show Monday, noting the large number that the Ducks spent on their roster. He also seemed to indicate that the Ducks should play better opponents in the nonconference.

“I think Oregon spent close to $40 (million) last year alone,” Gundy said. “So, that was just one year. Now, I might be off a few million. …Oregon is paying a lot, a lot of money for their team. From a nonconference standpoint there’s coaches saying they should (play teams with similar budgets).”

There’s clearly been a difference in the success of the programs in recent seasons. Last year, Lanning took Oregon to a Big Ten Championship and earned them the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff. The Cowboys, on the other hand, failed to win a Big 12 game and finished with their worst record in two decades under Gundy.

Dan Lanning still had some praise for Mike Gundy ahead of the matchup between the two on Saturday. However, he also made sure to back up his own school in the process.

“Ultimately, he’s a great coach and they’ve done an unbelievable job, but I wanna be a team that’s competing at the highest level,” Lanning said. We’re really fortunate to be in that situation. So I can’t speak on their situation. I have no idea what they got in their pockets over there. I’m sure UT-Martin maybe didn’t have as much as them last week and they played.”
