Since Deion Sanders took over as the head coach at Colorado in 2023, he has completely flipped the program. After winning just nine total games from 2020-22, the Buffaloes have won 13 games over the past two seasons.

Sanders has gotten quite comfortable at the program and at Colorado‘s stadium, Folsom Field. But he hasn’t quite gotten adjusted to the student section’s second quarter tradition.

“The smell of weed in the second quarter,” Coach Prime said with a laugh when asked if there was anything about the stadium that surprised him. “It surprises the heck out of me every game. I’m like DANG. It seems like it’s like a light-up quarter. You know what I’m saying? I’m like ‘is this the quarter that y’all chose?’ Whenever there’s a TV-timeout it never fails and I’m like ‘WOW‘. What’s going on, because I’ve never been out there a day in my life so that’s kinda new to me.”

Per Avon, CO’s police department, ‘adults 21 and older (in the state of Colorado) are allowed to possess up to 1 ounce of retail marijuana’. This has allowed for the creation of a ‘loud’ second quarter tradition that turns Folsom Field into a party.

JD PicKell is riding with Colorado in its season opener

There’s no doubt that the student section has been stocking up in anticipation of Colorado‘s season opener against Georgia Tech on Friday. Although both teams are opening up the season outside of the Top 25 rankings, this game will be massive for potential bowl game and maybe even College Football Playoff implications down the line.

“I don’t wanna feel stupid going into this Sunday morning after a Colorado game,” On3’s JD PicKell said on Wednesday. “So for that reason, I think this is the week one gotcha. I think Colorado ends up winning this game at home because I think Coach Prime will have them dialed in, playing inspired football. Colorado wins and covers because they are a four-point dog at home. I think they get it done.

“I think the game is played a bit more high-scoring, which favors Colorado. Final score is 31-27. Go Buffs. Colorado gets it done, and once again, Coach Prime delivers a promo post-game and gets the people going nationally. The Colorado juice will be very much in the fridge and on tap.”

Kick-off between the Buffaloes and Yellow Jackets Friday night is set for 8 p.m. The game will be shown on ESPN.
