Kansas State running back Dylan Edwards is out for the second half of Saturday’s season opener against Iowa State, head coach Chris Klieman told ESPN’s Taylor McGregor. He suffered an injury on a punt early in the first quarter.

Edwards appeared to tweak his left ankle on the play, which resulted in an Iowa State fumble recovery. He received treatment on the sidelines and later went back to the locker room before coming back out, though he didn’t have his helmet on. He also didn’t appear to go into the offensive huddle.

As he headed back for halftime, Klieman told ESPN Edwards will not return for the rest of the game. That means it’ll be next man up for K-State in sloppy conditions in Dublin for Saturday’s Week 0 opener.

The Wildcats leaned heavily on the rushing attack in the first quarter. Joe Jackson led the way in Edwards’ absence, totaling 40 yards on 10 carries. Jayce Brown added a 33-yard run while quarterback Avery Johnson took five carries for 12 yards and K-State’s lone touchdown of the first two quarters.

Edwards is preparing for his second season at Kansas State after transferring from Colorado. He’s expected to once again play a key role in the Wildcats backfield this year after sitting third on the roster in rushing yards behind DJ Giddens and Johnson in 2024.

Edwards was a highly rated recruit when he arrived at Colorado in 2023. The Buffaloes leaned heavily on the passing game that year, but he still led the team with 321 rushing yards and a touchdown before entering the transfer portal.

In 2024, Edwards proved to be a strong No. 2 option behind Giddens in the K-State backfield. He ran for 546 yards and five touchdowns while also totaling 133 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the passing game.

This year, Dylan Edwards topped Kansas State’s initial depth chart ahead of the Week 0 opener against Iowa State. He’s expected to take on a key role in the Wildcats backfield this season.

Saturday’s game presented a unique setting as the storied Big 12 rivalry headed to Dublin, Ireland to officially kick off the 2025 season. Weather presented an issue, though, as heavy rain poured after the game got underway in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.
