Entire West Virginia bench ejected from game vs. Duke after altercation

The entire West Virginia women’s basketball team bench was ejected from Friday’s game against No. 15 Duke following an altercation. That meant the Mountaineers were down to just their five remaining players for the rest of the matchup.
The incident occurred at the end of the first half of Friday’s game. Duke forward Jordan Wood blocked West Virginia guard Jordan Harrison’s shot, and Harrison took exception. The two started shoving and were ejected for fighting as a result.
During the altercation, five Mountaineers players came off the bench. By rule, that resulted in their ejections from the game and left the program with just five available players for the final two quarters of action.
West Virginia moved forward with just its five players remaining and trailed Duke 23-20 at halftime. But the Mountaineers erupted for 24 points in the third quarter to take a 44-32 lead into the fourth quarter at Colonial Hall at The Greenbrier.
Duke began to make a charge in the fourth quarter, though, as Celia Riviere got into foul trouble for WVU. However, the Mountaineers were able to stay the course and pull off an impressive, 57-49 victory over the Blue Devils without the ability to make a sub after halftime.

More on West Virginia’s impressive win over Duke
Sydney Shaw – West Virginia’s leading scorer and rebounder – was the lone starter left standing for West Virginia as the Mountaineers take on Duke. The other four players were all off the bench the rest of the way: Sydney Woodley, Riley Makalusky, Loghan Johnson and Riviere.
Shaw entered Friday’s game leading West Virginia with 16.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game through the first three games, while Woodley led the team in steals. Makalusky averaged 10.7 points to start the season, while Johnson had 2.7 points and 2.7 rebounds after transferring from Texas Tech. Riviere, meanwhile, scored six points total through three games in just 7.7 minutes on average and did not play in the first half Friday.
WVU entered Friday’s game with a perfect 3-0 record, all of which were by double digits. Last time out, the Mountaineers took down Temple 89-61 heading into the neutral-site game against No. 15-ranked Duke.
After dropping the season opener against Baylor, Duke has rattled off back-to-back resounding victories over Holy Cross and Norfolk State. Wood’s departure is significant for the Blue Devils as she entered Friday fourth on the team with 10 points per game and second on the roster with 7.0 rebounds per game.
