The Nebraska vs. Florida elimination game at the Stillwater Regional has been delayed in the fifth inning due to lightning being in the area.

Florida leads the Cornhuskers 7-4 in the top of the fifth with a runner on second. There are two outs in the frame.

Fisher Jameson was on the mound for Florida at the start of the delay. He only faced one batter before the lightning delay started.

Jameson took over for Pierce Coppola, who got off to a rough start but was excellent once he settled in. The lefty allowed a pair of two-run home runs but he followed that up with back-to-back scoreless innings. Coppola struck out eight batters in 4 1/3 innings of work.

“You know, the last two innings were really, really good,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said of his starting pitcher. “Obviously he gave up two runs in the first and the second, both with two outs. This is only, I think, his fifth start of the year, so he’s still working his way back through. But really pleased with how he’s been throwing the ball the last couple of innings, for sure.”

One of the two home runs Coppola allowed came off the bat of Gabe Swansen.

The sophomore had one home run in 25 games as the regular season came to an end. He now has seven home runs in the past eight games dating back to the start of the Big Ten Tournament.

Nebraska coach Will Bolt joined ESPN during the game and shared what has led to Swansen’s recent success.

“Well, about a month ago he started feeling something that could allow him to be a little more sudden in the box. When I say sudden, just quicker,” Will Bolt said. “He’s kind of been searching a little bit mechanically and it’s kind of taken a toll on him a little bit mentally. He found something about a month ago that’s worked for him and it’s clicked and he’s been on the barrel ever since.”

Gabe Swansen has upped his average to .326 on the season. Josh Overbeek has also homered for the Cornhuskers, but it’s Florida that leads in the fifth inning.

Bolt was also asked if Swansen has shared with the rest of the lineup what led to his hot streak.

“Well, if only it were that simple,” he said laughing. “Everybody’s a little bit different. But Gabe, he knows the strike zone and he’s hitting all different types of pitches and it’s been fun to watch.”
