Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar is off to a scalding hot start against No. 6 Georgia Saturday afternoon. The Vols have scored on all three drives and have jumped out to a 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Aguilar, in his first SEC game, has completed 10/11 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown. Former Georgia star turned college football analyst David Pollack took to Twitter/X to react to Aguilar’s hot start against his alma mater.

Joey Aguilar said this SEC stuff ain’t hard,” Pollack wrote. “First drive. 5-5 for 62 yards. 1 rush for a TD and Tennessee goes right down the field with ease to go up 7-0.”

Tennessee opened the game with a picture perfect eight-play, 75-yard drive capped off by an Aguilar four-yard rushing touchdown to take a 7-0 lead. Georgia bounced back and quickly tied the game just two minutes later, but the Volunteers immediately responded with a 72-yard passing touchdown from Aguilar to wide receiver Chris Brazzell III.

The Volunteer defense forced the first punt of the game, allowing Aguilar to go back to work. He led yet another long drive, finished off with a 14-yard pass from Aguilar to Brazzell for the duo’s second touchdown of the game. It’s safe to say that Aguilar isn’t having any troubles so far.

Smart spoke highly of Aguilar on Wednesday

“It looks like (Aguilar) has been there for a long time,” Georgia head coach Kirby Smart said earlier this week. “He’s very similar to the quarterbacks they’ve had. He plays within that system and is a really good athlete. He can take off and really hurt you with the scramble. He’s made some big plays that way. He plays within the system and is really good at the RPO as well. He makes good decisions, is accurate and has a strong arm. Certainly fits in well.”

Georgia has won eight consecutive games over Tennessee, dating back to the 2017 season. The Bulldogs have won 13 of the last 15 meetings. That number could have been 14 had the Volunteers not stolen the 2016 game on Josh Dobbs‘ game-winning Hail Mary.

Leading 21-14 early in the second quarter, the Vols are looking to snap the streak in front of a sold out Neyland Stadium Saturday afternoon.
