Former Oklahoma running back Seth McGowan has chosen his next destination after entering the NCAA transfer portal, committing to New Mexico State on Thursday.

McGowan spent his true freshman season with the Sooners where he played in seven games. Rushing for 370 yards on 58 carries with three touchdowns along with 13 receptions for 201 yards and one receiving score. Rushing for a career-high 73 yards versus Kansas State and Florida in the 2020 Cotton Bowl.

He was dismissed from the Oklahoma program in 2021 after being arrested and charged with robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. Sentenced to a year of probation in March after pleading guilty to larceny from a person at nighttime.

McGowan spent the 2023 football season at Butler Community College, where he appeared in six games and rushed for 125 yards on 39 carries for four touchdowns. Also catching five passes for 104 yards.

McGowan played high school football at Poteet High School in Mesquite (TX) where he was a four-star prospect. Ranked the No. 154 overall recruit and the No. 20 running back in the 2020 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Oklahoma named winner of spring portal window

A Chris Hardie commitment could be on the way in the near future, but even before his addition, On3’s Pete Nakos already pegged Oklahoma as one of the winners of the transfer portal’s spring window.

He wrote the following of OU’s portal adds:

Oklahoma knew it needed to add proven talent in the trenches this spring before officially making the move to the SEC. The Sooners delivered. Branson Hickman (SMU) can be immediately slated into the starting mix on the offensive line, specifically at center. A three-year starter at SMU, he made 33 career starts for the Mustangs and played 2,436 snaps.

“The biggest win of the spring for OU was landing Damonic Williams (TCU). A true freshman All-American in 2022, the Sooners beat out LSUMissouri and Texas for the 6-foot-2, 320-pound defensive tackle. As impactful as Williams can be for Oklahoma’s defensive line, the transfer win signified the Sooners can compete in NIL and are ready for the SEC. The TCU transfer was the top available defensive lineman this spring. He totaled 60 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks in two seasons with the Horned Frogs. Williams leaves Fort Worth with 26 career pressures and 20 hurries.”
