Four-star big man JP Estrella sets commitment date

Class of 2023 four-star prospect JP Estrella tells On3 he will announce his college decision on September 2nd.
The 6-foot-10, 210-pound power forward from South Portland, Maine has taken official visits to Syracuse, Iowa, Tennessee, and Marquette. Estrella also picked up offers from the likes of Duke, UConn, Kansas, Louisville, Harvard, Miami, and several others. He isn’t expected to take any more visits, so our eyes are pointed at the four schools he’s taken official visits to.
Estrella says he plans to narrow down his list in the next couple of weeks before making a decision.
Estrella is the No. 41 overall prospect in the 2023 class, according to the On3 Consensus, the average ranking from all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 7 power forward. It should also be noted that the big man will attend Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. for his senior year.
On3’s evaluators are much higher than the industry on Estrella, ranking him 16th nationally in the class.
Estrella talks schools
In a previous interview with On3’s Jamie Shaw, Estrella discussed a handful of schools involved in his recruitment.
Syracuse: “They were my first offer; they’ve been in this thing for a long time. I have a great relationship with their staff, and it is just one of the legacy basketball schools.”
Iowa: “I love Fran McCaffery, really their whole program in general. You see a lot of bigs come out of there, most recently Luka Garza. They develop players in their program.”
Tennessee: “They have been there for a while now; I think they were my third offer. They’ve been talking to me for so long; I have a great relationship with all their staff. I unofficialed down there and loved everything I saw, so I had to go back again.”
Marquette: “I love the staff there and have a great relationship with them. I learned a lot about their culture there, which is huge for me. I loved their facilities. That place was just awesome.”
Scouting Summary
JP Estrella has good size and he moves well. Competitive on the block, he understands angles and has good footwork. The skilled forward can step out and knock down shots off the catch. He is a good area rebounder and he works hard on the defensive end. He will need to continue adding weight, and he is going to need to work on the lateral quickness. There is a lot to like here as a stretch big with toughness and some pop.
