No. 10 Georgia holds off Auburn, picks up 20-10 win

Georgia meets Auburn in one of college football’s most tradition-rich rivalries that dates back to 1892. The 130th meeting comes Saturday night in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The Bulldogs enter Saturday looking to extend their dominance over the Tigers, having won eight straight in the series. The Tigers currently sit at 3-2 with a 0-2 mark in the SEC in Hugh Freeze’s third season on The Plains. With Georgia coming to town, all eyes will be on how the Tigers look following the bye week.

Kirby Smart timeout controversy

Officials halted the game as the play clock was winding down on a 3rd-and-9 for the Bulldogs, seemingly ready to grant Kirby Smart a timeout. Only Smart argued that he was simply clapping, not signaling for a timeout. He convinced the officials that’s what happened.

With the Georgia offense failing to take advantage of field position, the Bulldogs trotted out kicker Peyton Woodring for a 45-yard field goal attempt. Woodring’s kick sailed wide right to keep it a 13-10 game. Auburn’s ball from its 35-yard line.

Georgia needed only five plays to go 63 yards, highlighted by a Gunner Stockton 30-yard pass to Noah Thomas, to score its first touchdown of the night. Running back Chauncey Bowens capped off the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to tie it.

ABC sideline reporter Molly McGrath asked Auburn coach Hugh Freeze what the officials told him about the goal-line fumble.

“I have no clue,” he said. “I think it’s … our kids have played really hard, really well. We should be up more. We dominated the first half.”

McGrath followed up by asking what he would tell his players in the locker room.

“Hey, good, keep playing, man,” Freeze said. “I mean there’s more stoppages, more, I mean it’s … that may have been the longest half of football ever. I don’t know how many timeouts Georgia got with all the stoppages. Don’t have no clue how that doesn’t break the plane. No clue. We’re due a break, maybe, one of these damn times.”

Following the Auburn fumble on the goal line, Georgia put together a 12-play, 88-yard drive but failed to punch it in for a touchdown. The Bulldogs settled for a 29-yard field goal to make it a one-score game going into the second half.

Auburn’s Kayin Lee has been ejected for targeting on Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton. Georgia 1st-and-10 from the Auburn 42-yard line. ESPN rules analyst Matt Austin agreed with the call, saying it was targeting, in his opinion. He cited the way that Stockton’s head moved as proof that he was hit in the head/neck area.

Trying to punch in a touchdown on 3rd-and-Goal from the Georgia 1-yard line, Auburn quarterback Jackson Arnold was ruled to have fumbled while going into the end zone after review. Georgia takes over on its 1-yard line.

Georgia’s Daylen Everette injured

Going to tackle Auburn wide receiver Cam Coleman, Georgia defensive back Daylen Everette collided with a teammate and took a blow to the head. He remained down after the play and was helped off the field by the training staff.

Auburn strung together a 12-play, 70-yard drive, taking over five minutes off the clock. The Tigers were not able to find the end zone, but kicker Alex McPherson converted a 25-yard field goal to put them up by 10.

Hugh Freeze reiterates on the pregame show that backup offensive lineman Izavion Miller is expected to play more at offensive tackle. “We just have to a better job coaching the ones we have,” he said. Freeze also said twice that freshman offensive lineman Jacobe’ Ward would be the next guard in.
