Gio Lopez injury update: Bill Belichick reveals latest on North Carolina QB's status for Charlotte

North Carolina‘s quarterback position could remain in a state of flux this week leading up to the team’s Week 2 contest against Charlotte. Starter Gio Lopez took a hard hit in a 48-14 loss to TCU, with veteran Max Johnson taking over at that point.
Coach Bill Belichick provided a brief update on Lopez’s status on Wednesday. He didn’t reveal much.
“I talked to Gio this morning,” Belichick said. “He’s doing pretty good.”
After initially dodging a question about the plan at quarterback for the Charlotte game given Gio Lopez’s health status, Belichick was again pressed on a starter. He didn’t commit to either player.
“Yeah, we’ll see how it goes,” Belichick said. “We haven’t practiced yet this week, so we’ll see what things look like today when we get out there.”
Gio Lopez struggled tremendously in the passing game, going just 4-of-10 for 69 yards. He threw an interception, as well.
Things went much smoother when Johnson took over, though it’s worth noting the game was well in hand for the Horned Frogs by then. Still, Johnson provided a spark, going 9-of-11 passing for 103 yards and a touchdown.

It’s clear that Gio Lopez will have to play a little better if he hopes to maintain the job going forward. Johnson is certainly nipping at his heels.
“Yeah, look, we all have plays we’d like to have back from the game,” Belichick said. “Calls, plays, passes, tackles, you name it. You can’t participate in a game like that and not feel like there’s some things you could have done better or you’d like to do over again. So learn from those, move on and get ready for Charlotte. That’s all we can control.”
As for whether Gio Lopez will start going forward, that remains to be seen. Belichick was focused mainly on improvement.
“We need to learn some lessons from what happened in the TCU game, but at the same time there’s nothing we can do about that one,” he said. “It’s over with and we need to move on.”
