Report: Houston hiring LSU tight ends coach Slade Nagle as new offensive coordinator

Houston is set to hire LSU tight ends coach Slade Nagle as its new offensive coordinator, according to a report from CBS Sports. He previously worked as Willie Fritz’s offensive coordinator and tight ends coach at Tulane.
Nagle split special teams and tight ends coach duties at LSU this past season after working at Tulane from 2016-23. He worked his way up from tight ends coach to assistant head coach, quarterbacks coach and eventually offensive coordinator in 2023. He also served as the interim head coach for the Green Wave’s bowl game following Fritz’s departure for Houston a year ago.
Nagle played college football at Clemson and McNeese State from 1998-2001 before getting into coaching. He was a graduate assistant at Northwestern State from 2002-03 and worked at the JUCO level from 2004-05. In 2006, he returned to Northwestern State as offensive coordinator until 2009 when he headed for his first stint at LSU as special teams coach.
From there, Nagle worked as the co-offensive coordinator at Texas State in 2010, the running backs coach at Central Arkansas in 2011 and running backs coach at McNeese State from 2012-15. That’s when Fritz brought him aboard at Tulane, and the two will now reunite at Houston next season.

Houston struggled mightily on offense this season with Kevin Barbay as offensive coordinator. The Cougars ranked last in the Big 12 with 288.1 yards of offense per game and 14 points per game. That led Fritz to make a change at the end of November, moving on from Barbay and starting a “national search” for his replacement.
“We are grateful to Kevin for his dedication and contributions to our football program this season,” Fritz said in the release. “As we continue to assess every aspect of our program, it is clear we have not met our offensive standards. Kevin and his family have been wonderful members of our community, and we wish them nothing but success in the future. Our focus is on finishing the season strong Saturday against BYU. A national search for our next Offensive Coordinator will begin immediately.”
