Joey Galloway admits he's surprised Alabama is favored over Oklahoma in first round of CFP
Alabama is a 1-point favorite against Oklahoma, according to BetMGM, despite the Sooners defeating the Crimson Tide 23-21 on Nov. 15. On an episode of Nonstop, ESPN’s Joey Galloway revealed he was surprised oddsmakers named Alabama the favorite in the matchup.
“I was surprised to see Alabama favored in this game because it’s at Oklahoma,” Galloway said. “If the game was at Alabama, then I could understand that. But I am surprised to see Oklahoma the underdog in this game.”
Oklahoma’s win over Alabama earlier this season was on the Crimson Tide’s home turf. Nonetheless, Alabama looked far from comfortable.
The Crimson Tide committed three turnovers in the loss and lost despite recording 194 more yards of offense than the Sooners. Alabama’s mistakes were largely due to Oklahoma’s pressure.
The Sooners sacked Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson four times and recorded five total tackles for loss. Oklahoma has 41 sacks this season, tied for the most in the country. Galloway believes the Sooners will emphasize defensive pressure in their rematch with Alabama.
“If Oklahoma can do to Ty Simpson what Georgia did with the pressures and just making him look like he just couldn’t figure out where to go with the football in these pressure moments—I am sure Oklahoma has watched that,” Galloway said. “I’m sure Brent Venables has watched that film, along with what they did the first time around, and said, ‘Here’s how we can make him uncomfortable.’ I think, again, it’s going to come down to the turnover battle.”

As Galloway mentioned, Georgia also pressured Simpson in its 28-7 win over Alabama in the SEC Championship. Consequently, Simpson completed just 19-of-his-39 pass attempts and threw an interception.
Alabama and Oklahoma will square off on Friday at 7 p.m. CT. The game will air live on ABC and ESPN.
