Joey Galloway breaks down Colorado's College Football Playoff chances after Big 12 shakeup

Although Colorado had a bye in Week 10, it saw its odds to make the College Football Playoff get a lot better. That’s because both Iowa State and Kansas State lost their games to put the Buffaloes right in the middle of the race for the Big 12 Championship.
Colorado debuted at No. 20 in the first CFP rankings of the season, which were revealed Tuesday night on ESPN. They still come in behind the Cyclones and Wildcats, but ESPN analyst Joey Galloway argued that their chance to make the playoff looks much better than it did a week ago.
“What a weekend Colorado had being off and then sitting back and watching Iowa State lose and Kansas State lose,” he said. “Great weekend for Colorado because now they’re sitting in a place that if they can win out with a very easy schedule, they’ve got a chance to get in.”
Of course, the Big 12 champion will receive an automatic bid to the CFP. Notably, the Buffaloes get a matchup against Texas Tech, the team that beat Iowa State last week, on Saturday. This is important because Colorado does not play the Cyclones this season and the two teams are currently tied in the standings.

If Colorado were to beat Texas Tech on Saturday and both teams were to win out, it would trigger a tiebreaker comparing their records against common opponents. The win against the Red Raiders wouldn’t guarantee the Buffaloes win that tiebreaker, as ISU still plays Kansas State, which beat Colorado earlier this year.
There’s still a lot that has to happen in order for Colorado to make the College Football Playoff, but the opportunity is there if the cards fall right. That’s remarkable to think about considering the team won only four games last year and went 2-10 before Deion Sanders took over in 2023.
If the Buffaloes win Saturday, they should be in excellent position to at least compete in the conference title game, where they’d be just one win away from punching its ticket.
