This week marked the first week college programs could be out for the Fall live evaluation period. College coaches sat in high school gyms around the country, brandishing their logos across their chests, so their top basketball recruits could see them.

Fall is a telling time of year for recruiting. In the summer, college coaches are able to choose an event where they can see multiple players. In the Fall, you can get more of a feel for a program’s recruiting board because a coach is – most of the time – only able to visit one recruit at a time. They are forced to prioritize in the Fall.

Duke head coach Jon Scheyer hit the road this week to check in with some of the Blue Devils’ top prospects. He is in a unique position in that he has five players already committed and not signed, so mixing in visiting committed and non-committed players. Let’s recap the week.

Five-star PG Caleb Foster

Scheyer flew to Sherman Oaks (CA) Notre Dame to meet with Caleb Foster on the first day coaches could be out. Foster is the 2023 On3 Consensus No. 14 player in his class.

Five-star CG Jared McCain

After seeing Foster, Scheyer made the quick trip down to Corona (CA) Centennial to see Jared McCain. McCain, the 2023 On3 Consensus No. 18 player, committed to Duke in March.

Four-star F Carter Bryant

While in California, Scheyer made the trip to Newport Coast (CA) Sage Hill School to see 2024 On3 Consensus No. 26 Carter Bryant. Duke offered the 6-foot-7 forward this week.

Five-star F Mackenzie Mgbako

Jon Scheyer flew back across the country to Roselle (NJ) Catholic to see commitment Mackenzie Mgbako. Mgbako is the 2023 On3 Consensus No. 5 player in the class.

Four-star PF James Brown

Jon Scheyer joined Missouri’s Dennis Gates at Chicago (IL) St. Rita’s to see James Brown on Monday. The 6-foot-10 post is the 2024 On3 Consensus No. 28 player in his class.

Four-star SG Dylan Harper

Scheyer was by Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Prep to see 2024 On3 Consensus No. 11 Dylan Harper. The 6-foot-5 guard is the son of former NBA champion Ron Harper.
