Keontez Lewis injury update: Sooners WR initial status revealed on Oklahoma-South Carolina Wednesday report

The Oklahoma Sooners are looking to bounce back from a difficult loss in Red River this week. They’re staring down another very difficult test, though, getting ready to take on the South Carolina Gamecocks in Columbia.
South Carolina is sitting at 3-3 this season and is coming off a difficult road loss to LSU. Now, they need a win to get back on track and look to be a dangerous team. This is also a position they’ve been in before and seem to understand well. After all, as recently as last season, the Gamecocks were 3-3 heading into a test against Oklahoma. Then, for the Sooners, this is a new environment to deal with entirely, as they make their first-ever road trip to South Carolina.
Ahead of that meeting, both sides released their availability reports for Wednesday. These are, of course, the first availability reports that are coming out of the week. There will be further details on injured and unavailable players to come in the next few days, with further reports on Thursday, Friday, and ahead of the game itself.

The major question for Oklahoma has been how healthy starting quarterback John Mateer is going into the game. After injuring the thumb on his throwing hand and needing surgery, he returned to play last week, just over two weeks after that initial injury. However, he seemed to be playing through some issues, and those could continue to nag him throughout the coming weeks. After Red River, he was confident in his health, at least.

“Full go,” Mateer said of his status. “I played in the game. So, if anything starts hurting, I’ll chill out.”
Beyond Mateer, Oklahoma had a of total four offensive linemen out a week ago. Getting that group healthier to keep their quarterback clean is going to be vital. In particular, as Oklahoma is also coming off its worst offensive performance of the season. Earlier in the week, head coach Brent Venables shared that offensive tackle Derek Simmons was labeled as “day-to-day.” Running back Javontae Barnes is also dealing with a short-term issue going back to warm-ups last weekend.
South Carolina, meanwhile, is dealing with its own offensive line depth issues. Last week, three Gamecocks were out along the offensive line. That’s always a challenge for a team that is going to rely on the play of quarterback LaNorris Sellers. This also coincides with the decision to part ways with offensive line coach Lonnie Teasley.
There is still time for plenty of status changes moving forward. For now, though, that’s where Oklahoma and South Carolina stand ahead of this Saturday’s game.
