Kirk Herbstreit does not see 'obvious candidate' for the Heisman Trophy right now

With only four weeks remaining in the regular season, the Heisman Trophy race is still wide open. During an appearance on The Ryen Russillo Show, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit weighed in on the competition for the most-coveted individual accolade in college football.
“What I’ve learned about the Heisman these last five or seven years: It’s almost not a race until you get to the last three weeks of the season,” Herbstreit said. “There’s just never that Derrick Henry or that just obvious candidate. It’s a bunch of quarterbacks that happen to be engineering undefeated seasons.
“Like you said, it’s almost by default. ‘OK, let’s see what Ty Simpson does the last two or three games.’ He plays great in let’s say the SEC championship. ‘Hey, let’s give it to Ty.’ That’s kind of how I feel where the Heisman has been.”
Quarterbacks on winning teams are the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy this season. According to BetMGM, the four frontrunners to win the Heisman Trophy are Ohio State‘s Julian Sayin, Indiana‘s Fernando Mendoza, Alabama‘s Ty Simpson and Texas A&M‘s Marcel Reed.
Those quarterbacks’ four teams have a combined record of 32-1 this season. If any QB loses, their Heisman chances will likely take a significant hit. While Herbstreit doesn’t believe any player is easily the best in college football, there are couple stars who stand out to him.
“Marcel Reed’s a name to watch. I think he’s been doing some stuff at A&M,” Herbstreit said. “The kid at Texas Tech, the linebacker [Jacob Rodriguez]… Who’s the best player in the sport? I know defensive guys rarely get traction, but that guy. … That guy makes a ton of plays. So, hopefully he starts to get some traction if they keep winning games.”
