Kirk Herbstreit and his family suffered a devastating loss on Thursday, as their beloved dog Ben passed away after battling serious medical issues.

While the news rocked the football world, Herbstreit didn’t take the night off, as he fought through the heartbreak and was on the call for last night’s Thursday Night Football clash between the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens.

After the dust settled and the sun rose on Friday morning, Herbstreit took to X to shed some light on what he was going through during the game, thanking his peers for helping him excel during a challenging time, and letting the world know how much he’s appreciated the outpouring of support in the hours since Ben’s passing.

“Calling last nights game was very challenging,” Herbstreit posted on X. “So fortunate to work with such an extraordinary group of people at @NFLonPrime. From the pregame show to the game and the people behind the scenes. Thank you for love and kindness to help me get through it. And thank you to the Bengals and Ravens for providing such a compelling game.”

At least the Bengals and Ravens provided such a fast-paced, enthralling game that it alleviated Herbstreit’s sadness for a couple of hours. Still, anyone who’s lost a pet that they held near and dear to their heart knows what the multi-faceted broadcaster is going through.

Ben was undergoing treatment for cancer throughout 2024, and Herbstreit announced recently that it had taken a far more intensive turn. He shared the news of the passing of his beloved pet in a heartfelt social media post on Thursday afternoon.

Ben might’ve left this earth physically, football fans — and the Herbstreit family, certainly — will hold the beloved retriever in their hearts. Thoughts and prayers continues to be with them after their loss, as they partake in the grieving process.
