Conference Realignment Thoughts with JD

Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff is running out of time to save the conference. Colorado, USC, and UCLA are already confirmed to be leaving. Arizona will likely soon follow, being one step away from joining the Big 12. That would leave just six teams remaining but Arizona State and Utah could be next up.

There will reportedly be one “last ditch effort” to keep the Pac-12 together. DevilsDigest of Rivals reports there will be a meeting on Friday. And when specifically discussing Arizona State, University president Michael Crow — somebody who has been attempting to keep the conference together throughout the years — will be willing to hear the Pac-12 out.

“Hearing that Pac-8 (weird to say but true) is having one last ditch effort meeting tomorrow to try and salvage the conference,” DevilsDigest said via Twitter. “Michael Crow is willing to delay ASU’s decision and attend that meeting. Cautiously optimistic that ASU still makes the move.”

In modern conference realignment, moves are being made swiftly. The Pac-12 is learning as such all too well, seeing members bolt left and right.

Kliavkoff seemingly has one more opportunity to impress with a meeting on Friday. Something must be presented for University presidents to have hope for the future of the Pac-12. Otherwise, a few more places are going to be following the footsteps of Colorado, USC, and UCLA.

Arizona one step away from leaving Pac-12 for Big 12, Arizona State pending

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reported Arizona was a step away from joining the Big 12. The conference voted on and approved the move and the Arizona Board of Regents would be next. A simple meeting is all that is in the way of the move being completed.

Arizona State is under the same Board of Regents but still has some work to do. Crow has been the hold-up and is not going to cave to the Big 12. Reports state he is the reason the Sun Devils are not further in the process than they already are.

“It’s almost like (Crow)’s being dragged across the finish line,” somebody told 247Sports’ Chris Karpman.

No matter Arizona State’s final decision, the Pac-12 as we know it is dying. By the time the 2023 season begins later this month, an additional five teams could be leaving the conference. Arizona State would make it eight darting in favor of the Big 12 or Big Ten, leaving just four members.
