LSU transfer pitcher Deven Sheerin suffers torn ACL

Koki Riley of The Advocate reports Wednesday that LSU pitcher Deven Sheerin suffered from a torn ACL injury according to head coach Jay Johnson. Who is still unsure about when the right-handed pitcher from Pennsylvania will be able to return after the injury occurred this summer.
Sheerin’s knee injury could likely mean he misses the entirety of his first season with the Tigers. Transferring into the program this offseason following a standout freshman year with Mount St. Mary’s last season.
Following his freshman season with the Mountaineers, Sheerin took home MAAC Rookie of the Year honors, a First Team All-MAAC selection, was named a Second Team Freshman All-American from Perfect Game, and made the NCAA Division I East All-Region Second Team from ABCA/Rawlings. Breaking the Mount St. Mary program record for strikeouts with 109 in his 18 game appearances. Also setting school records for lowest opponent average at .197 and strikeouts per nine innings (14.01).
Sheerin had a 6-5 record on the mound for Mount St. Mary and helped lead the team to the semifinals of the MAAC Tournament. Helping deliver the program’s first two postseason wins since joining the conference.

Following his lone season with the Mountaineers Sheerin decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Ranked the No. 9 player to enter the transfer portal in mid-June according to On3’s Jonathan Wagner following his breakout freshman season. Standing at 6-foot-5 and weighing 245 pounds with a fastball that sits in the mid-to-upper 90s that’s touched 97 mph.
After committing to LSU, Sheerin wrote, “First off I would like to thank God for putting me in the position to play my favorite game at the highest level possible. I would also like to thank my family, friends and coaches that have helped me along the way. With this being said I am extremely excited to announce my commitment to play baseball at Louisiana State University.”
Sheerin is a tough loss for LSU’s bullpen, but represents just one of several talented pitchers acquired by Johnson through the transfer portal this offseason. Including Anthony Eyanson from UC San Diego, Jacob Mayers from Nicholls, Chandler Dorsey from South Florida, and Zac Cowan from Wofford.
