Miami sets school rushing touchdown record vs Bethune-Cookman

The Miami Hurricanes absolutely steamrolled the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats 70-13 on Saturday night, in the first win of the Mario Cristobal era. Their rushing attack piled on the yardage and the points in record-setting fashion. The ‘Canes ran for over 300 rushing yards and scored seven touchdowns on the ground. The seven rushing touchdowns in one game were a program record.

Running back Henry Parrish, Jr. led the way on Saturday with 14 carries for 108 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Thaddius Franklin, Jr. had nine carries for 79 rushing yards and two touchdowns. The ‘Canes did all that damage on the ground without their leading rusher, Jaylon Knighton. He did not play against Bethune-Cookman due to injury. After the dust finally cleared, the Hurricanes rolled up 305 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 42 carries.

Miami thoroughly dominated much of the game, and they were up 42-10 at halftime.

Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke was sharp as usual, completing 13 of 16 passes for 193 passing yards, while tossing in two touchdowns. Miami receiver Xavier Restrepo led the team in receiving yards on the night, hauling in five catches for 100 receiving yards and a touchdown.

While Miami did dominate most of the game, there were definitely some lapses on defense at times and Bethune-Cookman was able to take advantage of them. Wildcats’ quarterback Jalon Jones threw for 243 passing yards while tossing in a touchdown and an interception.

Tonight’s game was the first of the Mario Cristobal era in Coral Gables. Miami was able to convince him to come home after he spent 2018-2021 as the head coach of the Oregon Ducks. Cristobal has an extensive number of ties to the Miami area.

Next week, the Hurricanes will face the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Saturday, Sept. 10. Kickoff for that one is slated for noon.
