The focus for Dusty May is, of course, the Michigan Wolverines basketball program. Still, he has an eye on Indiana when he can, as a graduate. In particular, he’s enjoyed keeping up with the Hoosier football program this season.

As a head coach, Dusty May has a ton of respect for Curt Cignetti. On top of that, as he joked during a recent appearance on Outkick, he actually got to openly root for the Hoosiers during the Big Ten Championship because they were playing Ohio State.

“‘Shocked’ is not the word,” May said. “And I’ve learned a lot just from watching Coach Cignetti and his approach, his level of seriousness, but also we’ve prided ourselves on not practicing a lot over the years, of getting fresher throughout the season, and airing on the side of going shorter vs. longer. I’ve read where he’s been a proponent of that. Yeah, I was absolutely shocked. I’m just glad I was allowed to cheer for them for 3 hours because of their opponent on Saturday.”

The Game between Michigan and Ohio State is among the best rivalries in all of sports and it carries over into sports like basketball. Still, football is where it’s typically at its most intense. This year, Ohio State snapped a four-game losing streak to Michigan. So, May and the Wolverines were going through it a little bit when the Big Ten Championship rolled around.

Since May is a native of Indiana and played his college basketball for the Hoosiers, it’s only natural that he hopes they do well. That’s even true with him being at Michigan and now rooting for Michigan first and foremost. The chance to knock off Ohio State just helped out a bit extra.

In the end, Indiana had its first Big Ten Championship since 1967. The Hoosiers will also be in the College Football Playoff as the No. 1 seed. Ohio State, for its part, didn’t slip far in the rankings and will also have a bye in the CFP. So, there’s a good chance those two will meet again down the line.

For now, May is going to stay focused on Michigan basketball. Sitting at 9-0 overall and 1-0 in Big Ten play, the Wolverines are considered one of the best teams in the entire country. Michigan is ranked No. 2 in the country, according to the latest AP Poll. So, being ready for teams to take their best shot, with Maryland coming up on Saturday, is most important for the Wolverines.
