Michigan president Domenico Grasso sent a message to Wolverines faculty and student body on Thursday regarding the dismissal of former head coach Sherrone Moore in the wake of his subsequent arrest. Moore was terminated on Wednesday after engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a member of the team’s staff.

Within the letter, Grasso highlighted that Moore was “immediately terminated” upon finding out about the news. The Michigan president noted the university’s zero tolerance of this kind of conduct, and revealed that he’s been in close communication with the Board of Regents to figure out the program’s next steps.

“This breach of trust by Coach Moore is painful for many in our community, first and foremost, the individuals directly involved in this situation. Yet our swift and decisive action reflects the University’s staunch commitment to a campus culture of respect, integrity and accountability,” Grasso’s statement reads, in part. “All of the facts here must be known, so the University’s investigation will continue.

“… Our community has worked diligently in recent years to strengthen a safe and respectful environment for all. We must remain steadfast with those efforts. Each of us shares an obligation to uphold our values. If you become aware of any violation of U-M policies, I strongly encourage you to report it through the University’s compliance hotline.

“I have tremendous faith in the University of Michigan and the principled work our faculty, staff and students carry out every day,” the statement continued. “Together, we will move forward with integrity and excellence, and reaffirm our dedication to serving the public good.”

Moore was later arrested on the same day, which came after he reportedly broke into the staffer’s house and allegedly threatened her and himself with a knife. He was eventually detained and booked into the Washtenaw County Jail.

He replaced Jim Harbaugh, who left for the NFL and the Los Angeles Chargers after just leading Michigan to a national championship win. Moore took over that offseason and led the Wolverines to an 8-5 record after winning at least 12 games in each of the last three seasons prior. After taking Michigan to a 9-3 finish during the 2025 regular season, Moore ends his tenure in Ann Arbor with a 17-8 overall record.

Michigan will move forward with Biff Poggi serving as its interim head coach while keeping its focus on the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl vs. Texas on New Year’s Eve. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET live on ABC.
