Only days before hosting Baylor for a Week 4 matchup, Oklahoma State has fired Mike Gundy. The move closes a 21-year stint for the former Cowboys quarterback as the head coach of his alma mater.

Gundy brought the program to new heights, including two 12-win seasons and the highest AP Poll ranking in school history.

Oklahoma State’s decision on Tuesday to fire Gundy opens a 30-day transfer portal window for Oklahoma State players only three games into the season. NCAA rules allow athletes on a team with a coaching change to enter the portal the day after the change. In this case, Oklahoma State athletes can enter starting on Wednesday.

According to the NCAA, an athlete who transfers after enrolling at a school cannot transfer during that same year and compete for a new school. Players could now redshirt this season and transfer. The 30-day windows give players a significant head start on entering the portal.

Next to hiring a head coach, the other top priority for the Oklahoma State administration will be to work to keep the roster together. The move marks the third Power Four program to fire its head coach before the end of September. The college football transfer portal does not have any firm dates yet; however, the spring portal window has been eliminated.

Oklahoma State has a pair of young quarterbacks in Zane Flores and Hauss Hejny who could be candidates to enter the portal. Redshirt freshman running back Rodney Fields Jr. is the leading rusher for Oklahoma State and has three years of eligibility remaining.
