Cincinnati defensive assistant coach Kerry Coombs is being kept on staff by new head coach Scott Satterfield, the school announced on Friday. In addition to coaching the secondary, Coombs will also be the special teams coordinator for the Bearcats.

Coombs was previously the defensive coordinator at Ohio State under head coach Ryan Day, but was let go at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season. Coombs then joined the staff of Luke Fickell at Cincinnati ahead of the 2022 season.

Coombs also signed a three-year deal. He is currently serving as the interim coach for Cincinnati and will coach them in the Wasabi Fenway Bowl against Louisville, Satterfield’s former employer, of all teams.

Coombs has a long history coaching in the state of Ohio and, moreover, Cincinnati. He’s been an assistant there twice, along with coaching high school football in the area and his time up in Columbus on the Ohio State staff.

“We’re excited to keep Coach Coombs on our staff,” Satterfield said in a release. “His energy is contagious. He’s an excellent motivator and developer of young men on and off the field. His resume here in Cincinnati, but also in the NFL and at Ohio State, speaks for itself. He’s respected throughout the country. Interacting with him this past week and watching him serve as the interim head coach, I’ve been very impressed, and I know he will be a perfect fit for what we are building here.”

Along with his Ohio roots and experience coaching high school and college ball, Coombs has NFL experience, too. He coached under former Ohio State player and current Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel for a handful of seasons in Nashville.
