Carrollton (Texas) Newman Smith four-star power forward Nic Codie is down to seven schools, he tells On3. Moving forward, the 6-foot-8, 200-pound rising senior will consider Auburn, Houston, LSU, Miami, TCU, Texas, and Virginia Tech.

So far, Codie has officially visited two programs — TCU and Houston. Texas has unofficially hosted him.

Along with his finalists, Codie also received offers from Alabama, Kansas, Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and others.

According to the On3 Industry Rankings, Nic Codie is the No. 55 overall prospect in the 2024 cycle. He’s also the No. 7 power forward prospect and the No. 2 player in the state of Texas. The On3 Industry Ranking is a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. On3’s evaluators are higher on Codie, ranking him 37th overall in the class.

Codie talks programs involved

In a previous interview with On3, Codie went in-depth on several of the schools recruiting him.

TCU: “At TCU, I learned that it is like a home atmosphere over there. Yes, it is close to home, but everyone there supports you, the whole city of Fort Worth. During the visit, everyone was talking to us, everyone was so nice. All the coaches were great, and the team just took us in. They’re looking to play me like E-Man (Emmanuel Miller). They want me to be a versatile four there. Play me in and out so I can be on the wing or go inside and post up smaller defenders and be a lockdown defender.”

Houston: “The visit there was really good. I’ve been talking with Houston for a while now, and they stay in contact all the time. I know they develop their four men really well. I’m a versatile four-man, and Houston and Coach (Kelvin) Sampson have a history of developing the fours.”

Texas: “Getting Texas was a big deal. It’s the biggest college in Texas, so it was big for them to recruit me. They have a lot of history, they had a good year last year. They play fast and strong.”

Virginia Tech: “They’re in constant communication. Coach JD Byers is always texting me or calling me. He is always checking in after games and has done a great job of letting me know how I would fit in there. He does a great job communicating, and that’s what I like about Virginia Tech.”

What he’s looking for in a program

“I’m looking for a program that is going to develop me as a player,” Nic Codie says. “I also want to go to a place that has a real family atmosphere. When I move away for college, that is going to be my family, so I have to make sure I feel good with them.

“I want a coach that is going to develop me and let me know. I don’t want to play in a system that just focuses on one part of my game, I want to grow and develop my entire game. Early playing time is something that I’m looking at. I want to be at a place I can compete for early minutes.”

Scouting Report

The upside of Nic Codie is so intriguing. Standing in the 6-8 range with a reported 7-2 wingspan, you like the way he moves. This gives him upside on the defensive end, with the fluidity to slide his feet and the length to get in the passing lanes and rotate on the block. Offensively, he is crafty in the paint. He has a quick, off-cadence release from 15-feet and in and he is confident with a jump hook or floater with his right hand. While the ball skills are still raw and he will need to continue working on the balance and footwork, he shows the ability to step out and knock down a three. That potential spacing the jump shot would provide is a nice added bonus to his game. There is a lot to like here, and Codie is younger for his grade.
