There’s another big-time college football matchup on the docket for future seasons. Auburn and Notre Dame will meet in a home-and-home during the 2027 and 2028 seasons, according to On3’s Brett McMurphy.

Notre Dame will open as the host for the series on Sept. 25, 2027. The following year, the teams will head to The Plains to play at Auburn on October 28, 2028.

The two programs have never before met on the gridiron. So it promises to be an entertaining venture for both sides.

Much will change between now and then, though it’s hard to say just how much. For starters, at least one of the programs will be under different leadership after Auburn parted ways with coach Hugh Freeze over the weekend, midway through his third season at the helm.

And though Notre Dame is more stable on that front, head coach Marcus Freeman has been named as a candidate to watch at a number of the job opening this season. Jobs like Florida, LSU and Penn State have all seen mentions of him pop up in recent days.

While it’s too early to know exactly what the future might hold when 2027 rolls around, the meeting isn’t all that far away. Certainly not too far enough away to keep from getting excited about two of college football’s iconic brands getting set to square off.

Auburn has struggled this season, going 4-5 and leading to Freeze’s ouster. But Notre Dame has been excellent once again after a slow start to the year.

The Fighting Irish dropped their first two games of the season to Miami and Texas A&M but have since rebounded to win six straight. The program is ranked No. 10 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, in position to reach the playoff once again. Last year, Notre Dame reached the national championship game under Freeman’s direction.

Can Auburn right the ship and turn this into a monster showdown? A new coach will have more than a full year to get the program in shape leading up to the matchup in South Bend.
