Things are going from bad to worse in Coral Gables. After limping out to a 2-3 start this season, Miami lost the commitment Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson defensive back Tre’Quon Fegans on Monday.

Fegans, the No. 233 overall player in the 2022 On300 rankings, tweeted: “I would like to say that I’m decommitting from the University (of) Miami and reopening my recruitment… My recruitment is 1000% open!!!”

The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder committed to the Hurricanes over Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Oklahoma in July. He was one of four Miami commits ranked in the 2022 On300. But he will now likely be a target for some — if not all of his other finalists — and numerous other programs.

As a sophomore at Oxford (Alabama) High, he recorded five interceptions, each of which he returned for touchdowns. He totaled 63 tackles, 15 PBUs, and also had 204 yards and 5 touchdowns on offense at running back. As a junior, he was a MaxPreps All-American. And after transferring to Thompson this season, he’s notched 22 tackles, seven PBUs and an interception.

‘Canes are struggling in the 2022 cycle

With Tre’Quon Fegans’ decommitment, Miami now has just eight players committed for the 2022 class, and the Hurricanes’ class ranks No. 59 nationally and No. 8 in the ACC. To add potential insult to injury, fellow defensive back commit Chris Graves visited Florida this weekend, according to On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons.

The Hurricanes have struggled out of the gate in 2021, getting blown out by Alabama in Week 1 before being blown out by Michigan State in Week 3 and losing a heartbreaker to Virginia Sept. 30. Miami, which started the season ranked No. 14, has fallen out of the Top 25 and is just 16-13 through two and a half seasons under head Manny Diaz.

Rumors have swirled about Diaz’s future in Coral Gables, and that uncertainty only hurts on the recruiting trail.
