Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) American Heritage EDGE Marvin Jones Jr. announced Wednesday that he is headed to Georgia.

Jones is the No. 16 prospect in the 2022 class, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

On3’s own rankings — the On300 — peg Jones as the No. 1 prospect in the 2022 class.

Jones chose the Bulldogs over Alabama, GeorgiaFlorida State and Oklahoma.

There was heavy competition for Marvin Jones Jr.

Jones’ recruitment was one of the hardest to pin down in the entire 2022 class. He was considered a Florida State lean for much of it because his father, Marvin Jones Sr., was a star linebacker for the Seminoles during the 1990s. But Oklahoma and Lincoln Riley made a major impression on the Joneses when they visited in September.

When Riley left for USC a few weeks ago, though, Jones’ mom tweeted that the Sooners were no longer being considered. Alabama and Georgia both ramped up their pushes in the final few weeks before signing day, with the Tide getting him on campus Nov. 6 and Georgia getting him Dec. 10. In between, he took an official visit to see the Seminoles one last time, and he tripped to Los Angeles to see Riley and the Trojans.

But it was Georgia who appeared to have all the momentum leading up to Jones’ announcement.

“Late into the evening, I am hearing Georgia has the edge as we get ready to enter the early signing period,” On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons wrote Tuesday night. “He has had multiple conversations with the Georgia staff today, including head coach Kirby Smart. Jones has also spoken with Georgia commits about his interest in the Bulldogs.

….This one is still not over completely, and there has strong communication with Alabama and Florida State I have confirmed as well with different sources. More than one source feels Georgia holds the lead late though.”

Jones is the Bulldogs’ fifth five-star commitment this cycle, and all of them have come on the defensive side of the ball. He joins athlete Malaki Starks, defensive lineman Mykel Williams, and cornerbacks Jaheim Singletary and Daylen Everette.
