On Friday afternoon, as college sports fans across the country saw the Pac-12 change before their very eyes, the Oregon Ducks Board of Trustees held a zoom meeting at 5:30 PM ET. In that meeting, the Chairman of the Board, Steve Holwerda, was seen playing golf.

The man was in charge of one of the most important meetings in school history and he decided that it simply would not interrupt his round of golf. Shortly after, on The Paul Finebaum Show, Finebaum absolutely eviscerated Holwerda for playing golf during the historic vote.

Paul Finebaum ripped Steve Holwerda on Friday

“I realize it’s Friday afternoon in Oregon and everybody has a chance to go play golf,” Finebaum began.

Then, the SEC Network talk show host did not hold back, as he ripped Holwerda.

“But this guy you’re looking at right now, most of you watching, is the chairman of the board of the Oregon trustees. They have one of the most monumental decisions in school history happening while he is on the golf course. Now, we have a picture of him in the bunker. Did he get a sandie or what?! I don’t play golf anymore. When I did, everybody that plays golf gets consumed by it. But can’t you like….Mr. Chairman, can’t you say you know what, I’ve got a lot going on at my University, I am the head of the board of trustees. We have a fiduciary responsibility to all the people that we support. My board is meeting. Maybe show some leadership. Like…I’m in charge. We’re moving to the Big Ten. It’s a controversial decision. Maybe not everybody agrees with it. It’s affecting…it’s helping to blow up a once proud league. And you can’t find anything better to do. You can’t say, you know what, maybe I can play golf later,” Finebaum said.

“What is it? It’s three o’clock in the afternoon in Oregon? Is that right? The sun doesn’t set ’til 8:30. You couldn’t have put off your golf round? Maybe I don’t appreciate golf. Maybe it’s too important. But if you’re the chairman of the board of trustees at the University of Oregon you can’t get out of the golf cart, drive to the clubhouse (laughs), and sit in front of a computer and do the meeting? Instead of looking like a complete buffoon getting out of a bunker? That’s a tough pin position by the way. I can see why he went in the bunker. He went right for the pin and ended up in the sand. I mean, that’s absurd. That is really….and you wonder what’s wrong with intercollegiate athletics. I guarantee you the board chairman down at FSU wouldn’t be in a bunker if his school was coming to the SEC,” Finebaum said.

Finebaum brings up some fantastic points. It’s pretty amazing on one of the most important votes in school history, that the Chairman of the Board couldn’t wait to play his round of golf. Not only did the entire Oregon athletic department hang in the balance of their meeting, but so did the rest of the Pac-12 Conference.
