Report: Big 12 decides to end league's preseason media poll, will continue all-league teams

Big 12 conference athletic directors and coaches have decided to do away with the league’s preseason media poll, Action Network’s Brett McMurphy reported on Friday. The Big 12 will, however, continue its preseason all-league teams.

This comes a season after Arizona State was selected 16th (last) in the preseason poll, but won the league. The Sun Devils landed a spot in the College Football Playoff with that.

The poll, mostly done for preseason hype and clicks, usually provided nothing but motivation to teams picked below others. Hence, the Arizona State ascent from preseason No. 16 team in the league to the No. 4 seed in the 2024 College Football Playoff.

Last season, Utah was picked as the preseason favorite in the Big 12 and finished with a 5-7 (2-7) record. The entirety of last season’s Preseason Big 12 Poll, along with the teams’ actual finish, is below.

  2. Kansas State Wildcats (T-8th with 5-4 Big 12 record, 9-4 overall)
  3. Oklahoma State Cowboys (16th with 0-9 Big 12 record, 3-9 overall)
  4. Kansas Jayhawks (10th with 4-5 Big 12 record, 5-7 overall)
  5. Arizona Wildcats (T-13th with 2-7 Big 12 record, 4-8 overall)
  6. Iowa State Cyclones (T-1st with 7-2 Big 12 record, 11-3 overall)
  7. West Virginia Mountaineers (T-8th with 5-4 Big 12 record, 6-7 overall)
  8. UCF Knights (T-13th with 2-7 Big 12 record, 4-8 overall)
  9. Texas Tech Red Raiders (T-5th with Big 12 6-3 record, 8-5 overall)
  10. TCU Horned Frogs (T-5th with Big 12 6-3 record, 9-4 overall)

The preseason polls were usually voted upon at Big 12 Media Days, which takes place on July 8-9 in Frisco, TX. Although the preseason polls will now longer be taken, preseason all-league polls will remain. Let the bickering between fan bases continue.

Look for some of the league’s biggest names to emerge on those teams, including Arizona State star quarterback Sam Leavitt, his star wide receiver Jordyn Tyson, explosive Baylor wide receiver Josh Cameron and highly touted NFL Draft prospect Jacob Rodriguez (linebacker) from Texas Tech.
