Report: Georgia, Florida State eyeing neutral site game to replace home-and-home

Back in 2019, it was announced that Georgia and Florida State would face each other in a home-and-home series in 2027 and 2028. However, it now seems that at least one of those games will be played at a neutral site.

The two powerhouse programs are looking at playing in the 2028 season in Tampa, the Athens Banner-Herald’s Marc Weiszer reported on Friday. The game would presumably be played at Raymond-James Stadium, home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The last meeting between these two programs came in the 2023 Orange Bowl, where the Bulldogs waxed the Seminoles 63-3. Without star quarterback Jordan Travis able to play, Florida State was just a different team. Travis’ injury was the main reason that FSU was held out of the Playoff that season, and the Orange Bowl certainly solidified the fact that the right decision was made.

Florida State and Georgia haven’t met in a regular season game since 1964. The rivalry was played almost every season from 1954-1965 before it was cancelled. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series 7-4-1.

Florida State and Georgia have gone in separate directions since 2023 Orange Bowl

Since the last meeting between FSU and UGA, the programs have gone in completely different directions. Fresh off its phenomenal 13-1 campaign in 2023, Florida State suffered its worst season in program history in 2024. The Seminoles went 2-10, ushering in doubt about head coach Mike Norvell. Things, however, seemed to be going back in the right direction, however, as it upset No. 8 Alabama 31-17 in Tallahassee to kick off the 2025 season.

Following this win, though, the Seminoles went 4-7 in their final 11 games and missed bowl eligibility for the second consecutive season.

Georgia has bounced back in a strong way and made the College Football Playoff in back-to-back seasons, earning a bye in both iterations of the event. It fell to Texas in the Quarterfinal without quarterback Carson Beck last season, but rolled Alabama in the SEC Championship Game and will face the winner of No. 6 Ole Miss/No. 11 Tulane in the Quarterfinal (Sugar Bowl) this season.

Per Weiszer’s report, Georgia approached Florida State about the changes. The Bulldogs just recently got their series against Georgia Tech switched to a neutral site game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, while they play Florida yearly in Jacksonville (EverBank Stadium).
