Ryan Day blocks Ohio State players from midfield flag plant after beating Michigan
No. 1 Ohio State dominated rival No. 15 Michigan 27-9 Saturday afternoon in the latest installment of ‘The Game’, earning its first win in the rivalry since 2019.
Following the win, multiple Buckeyes attempted to plant the Ohio State flag at midfield of Michigan Stadium, but head coach Ryan Day put a stop to it. He sent his team to the locker room to celebrate the win and clinching a spot in both the Big Ten Championship Game and the College Football Playoff.
The score wasn’t even an indication of how dominant Ohio State was in the game. The Buckeyes outgained the Wolverines 419-163 and recorded 13 more first downs (22-9). They also doubled Michigan‘s time of possession, 40:01 to 19:59.
“I’m happy for our players and I’m happy for the coaches and all the fans that were at the game,” Day said postgame. “Man, it was great to see all the fans stay all the way towards the end and cheer on the team. Hearing the O-H-I-O right here in this stadium was great for our players. They deserve it. They’ve worked hard. I thought they played really well, strong, and physical in this game. I’m happy for our coaches. But again, the fans even who weren’t here will be able to wear that block ‘O’ and stand a little prouder.”

“That means a lot to me, the coaching staff, the players, and my family. I’ve thought, as you can imagine over the years, after winning this game about what I’d say in this press conference. I’m gonna save all those comments, because the best thing to do is win with humility and that’s what we’re going to do. It speaks to our program and it speaks to what it means to be a Buckeye. We wanted to take this rivalry game back this year, and the way our guys played spoke to that. They played with great passion and physicality.”
Following the win, Ryan Day is now 2-4 in the rivalry. He and his team will now begin preparing for next week’s Big Ten Championship Game against Indiana, which will be a battle of the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the College Football Playoff Rankings.
