Samson Johnson fouls out for pushing Mousse Cisse, controversially upgraded to double tech

Feast Week has officially tipped off in college basketball with the Maui Invitational. Memphis and UConn are facing off to start the tournament, providing quite an entertaining game. Overtime was required between the two after an incredible comeback from the Huskies.
Unfortunately, some extracurricular pushing and shoving took place during the extra period between the two teams. Samson Johnson pushed Mousse Cisse after a Memphis bucket. Cisse certainly embellished the moment by falling and sliding down the floor.
Dain Dainja felt the need to back his teammate up and got in Cisse’s face. Both head coaches got into the scuffle, attempting to deescalate the moment. The two players were eventually split apart as both teams went back to their bench. Officials went to the monitor to review the entire sequence, eventually deciding double technical fouls would be assessed.
No matter the determination, it was Johnson’s fifth foul. He was going to be out for the final two and a half minutes plus any potential extra overtime. You can check out the full moment from Johnson, Cisse, and Dainja here.

Johnson was one of UConn’s five starters of the day but foul trouble kept him from playing too much. His foul out occurred in just 14 minutes, only scoring two points, dishing out one assist, and securing one steal. No other stat occurred for Johnson and had to leave the game after a moment of frustration.
As for the rest of the team, they will have to deal without Johnson for the final stretch. Getting wins in Maui can be incredibly difficult, even in the first round. The tournament brings in such quality programs, all battling for resume builders for down the line.
Hopefully, there will be no more tension between the two teams in the final 2:30. Officiating handled the double technical foul situation in a swift matter. Now, all the focus is on producing quality final minutes of what has been a fun game.
