Sean Casey injury update: Former MLB star tears hamstring during Savannah Bananas appearance

The Savannah Bananas continue to evolve into one of the biggest spectacles in all of sport.
The Bananas barnstorming tour continued Friday night, when they played in front of a sold-out Great American Ballpark (home of the MLB’s Cincinnati Reds). Along with the Savannah Banana and Texas Tailgater rosters, former Reds players Sean Casey, Todd Frazier, Bronson Arroyo and Danny Graves made appearances.
While Frazier’s one-off at-bat went off without a hitch, Casey’s however did not.
The 3-time MLB All-Star and member of the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame drew a four-pitch walk, but unfortunately tore his hamstring rounding first base.
He took to X/Twitter Sunday morning, where he revealed his injury status.
“What a moment to have one more AB in front of the greatest fans in the world last night in Cincinnati!! Thx to the Savannah Bananas and [Savannah Bananas founder Jesse Cole] Yellow Tux Jesse for the opportunity! Banana Ball is so fun, what an experience! I was hoping for one more double in the gap, but I’ll take the walk for the team n tight morning hammy. Loved my man [Danny Graves] on the call!”
Casey, who has been an MLB Network analyst since retiring in 2009 (other than a brief stint as the New York Yankees’ hitting coach in 2023), played 12 MLB seasons with the Cleveland Indians, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox.
“Banana Ball has become the fastest and most entertaining game in sports,” says the official Savannah Bananas website. “With its fast-paced rules and emphasis on continuous play, Banana Ball strips away the often criticized lulls and lengthy pauses typical of traditional baseball, delivering a high-octane and entertainment-packed game that keeps both players and fans on their toes. Banana Ball has 11 unique rules. The most notorious rule is that if a fan catches a foul ball, it counts as an out.”

Think of Banana Ball as the Harlem Globetrotters version of baseball. This phenomenon has slowly grown over the past few years, and the league is even beginning to sell out Major League Baseball stadiums. Their biggest crowd came on April 26, when the Bananas played in front of 81,000 fans at Clemson University’s Memorial Stadium, home of the Clemson Tigers.
The now 50 year old Sean Casey will now return to the broadcasting booth and likely allow the professionals to have all the fun on the diamond from now on. Best of luck to the Reds legend as he recovers from his torn hammy.
