Report: Sean McVay considering stepping down as Rams coach

Sean McVay is considering stepping down as the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams following the end of this season, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. McVay will reportedly take time to mull over the decision following the season finale against Seattle on Sunday.

McVay led the Rams to a Super Bowl victory last year, but followed that up with a disappointing 2022 campaign. With one game remaining so far this season, LA is 5-11 with no shot to make the postseason.

Sean McVay is under contract to the Rams through the 2026 season, but if he were to step away, the contract would toll and he would remain under contract to Los Angeles. He is in his sixth season with the Rams, having amassed a 60-37 overall record in that span.

This season has been marred by injuries for LA, with receiver Cooper Kupp and quarterback Matthew Stafford on injured reserve. Additionally, star defensive tackle Aaron Donald has not appeared in a game since Nov. 27 as he battles an ankle injury.

Sources indicated to ESPN that the rough season may have taken its toll on McVay, who also got married and lost his grandfather in the past year. If McVay ultimately does decide to step down as the Rams coach, some have speculated he could make a move to television. He received interest from Amazon to work on Thursday Night Football, but turned it down to return for another season as an NFL coach.

Sunday’s game between the Rams and Seahawks will have big interest not only for the news about McVay, but also because of the playoff implications for Seattle. If the Seahawks come away with the win and the Lions beat the Packers, Seattle will make the playoffs.
