Sherrone Moore charges: Horrifying details emerge on incident involving ex-Michigan coach

Former Michigan head football coach Sherrone Moore was formally charged Friday following his detainment earlier this week in Washtenaw County, Michigan, according to a press release. Disturbing details surrounding the incident involving the 39-year-old have since emerged.

According to prosecutors, Moore was unarmed when he allegedly entered the residence through an unlocked door without permission. Authorities say a verbal confrontation ensued and escalated. Prosecutors allege Moore retrieved knives and scissors from a drawer and threatened to harm himself, telling the woman involved that “my blood is on your hands.”

Court filings indicate Moore left the residence after the woman contacted her attorney and said she would call the police. Prosecutors described the victim as having been “terrorized” by the encounter.

Moore faces multiple charges, including third-degree home invasion, stalking, and breaking and entering. Under Michigan law, third-degree home invasion is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a $2,000 fine. The stalking charge is a misdemeanor carrying a potential sentence of up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Additionally, the breaking-and-entering charge is also a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine.

Moore was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail at approximately 8:30 p.m. ET on Dec. 10, following his detainment by police earlier that afternoon. The Pittsfield Township Police Department responded to a call around 4:10 p.m. ET on Dec. 10 in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor-Saline Road while investigating an alleged assault.

“The Pittsfield Police Department responded to the above location at the above date and time for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault,” the department said in a statement. “A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature. There appears to be no ongoing threat to the community.”

ESPN’s Dan Wetzel first reported Moore’s detainment in Saline, Michigan, with The Detroit News’ Tony Paul later confirming police involvement that day. In a statement to ESPN, the City of Saline Police Department said it assisted in locating Moore before transferring him to Pittsfield Township authorities.

“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore,” the statement read. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”

Michigan named Biff Poggi interim head coach

The University of Michigan officially announced Moore’s termination on Dec. 10, with athletic director Warde Manuel stating the firing was for cause. According to the university, an internal investigation found credible evidence Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. That constituted a violation of university policy.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” Manuel said in a statement. “This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”

Biff Poggi was appointed interim head coach effective immediately. On3’s Pete Nakos reported Michigan players were informed of the decision during an abrupt team meeting.

Michigan finished the 2025 regular season 9–3, including a 2–0 record under Poggi while Moore previously served a suspension related to a sign-stealing investigation. The Wolverines remain scheduled to face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
