Police are investigating an alleged assault involving former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, the Pittsfield Township Police Department said in a statement. Moore is in custody in the Washtenaw County Jail following his detainment by police earlier Wednesday.

Moore was detained by police in Saline, Mich. Wednesday night and turned over to Pittsfield Township police. Officers responded the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Rd. in Pittsfield Township on Wednesday at approx. 4:10 p.m. ET to investigate an alleged assault, Pittsfield Police said in a statement.

Police confirmed the suspect – Moore, who was not named in the press release – was at Washtenaw County Jail, pending a review of charges. No further details were released. Court records show Moore was booked into the Washtenaw County Jail on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. ET. No charges have yet been released.

“The Pittsfield Police Department responded to the above location at the above date and time for the purposes of investigating an alleged assault,” the statement read. “The department has received multiple media requests for information. A suspect in this case was taken into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community. The suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor.

“At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigations, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details. Further details regarding the incident will be released as soon as permissible.”

In a previous statement to ESPN, the Saline Police Department said it assisted in locating and detaining Moore on Wednesday. From there, officers turned him over to Pittsfield Township police.

“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore,” Saline Police said in a statement to ESPN. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”

Moore’s detainment came after his firing as Michigan’s coach, which AD Warde Manuel confirmed was for cause. A university investigation found evidence Moore had an alleged inappropriate relationship with a staff member, which was a violation of school policy, Manuel said in a statement.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” Manuel said in a statement. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior. Biff Poggi has been appointed head football coach in an interim capacity, effective immediately.”
