The national championship ended in disappointment for Coastal Carolina and for more reasons than one. Head coach Kevin Schnall was tossed from the contest for arguing calls, leaving the Chanticleers without their leader for the final eight innings.

LSU would secure a 5-3 win to take home the title. And though it will be no major consolation for Schnall, he was the recipient of an exceedingly classy gesture from the Tigers.

Skip Bertman, the long-time former LSU coach and athletics director, traveled to Omaha this weekend to take in the championship series. And he wanted to have a chat with Schnall after the game.

Taken over to the Coastal Carolina dugout in a wheelchair, Bertman shook hands with Kevin Schnall and spoke to him for almost a minute after the game. It was a touching moment and a real show of sportsmanship. You can check it out below.

Of course, Kevin Schnall will certainly wish things had gone a little differently. His ejection, along with that of first-base coach Matt Schilling, left the Chanticleers shorthanded, already facing an uphill climb after losing Game 1 on Saturday.

Kevin Schnall ejected from CWS

Schnall stepped onto the field to seemingly complain about an umpire’s strike call. The umpire motioned for him to back up and when Schnall didn’t obey, the umpire ejected him from the game.

From there, Kevin Schnall stormed onto the field, going after the umpire who had thrown him out of the game. Another official attempted to step between Schnall and the umpire he was going after, and was knocked to the ground in the process.

While commentators typically remain unbiased on the broadcast, ESPN’s crew couldn’t help but criticize the umpires’ early ejection of Schnall. Play-by-play announcer Karl Ravech was particularly critical of the ejection.

ā€œThat’s an aggressive ejection,ā€ Ravech said. ā€œAngel Campos is a name familiar in umpiring circles, had some major league experience as well, a veteran umpire. But (Kevin) Schnall and the first base coach Schilling have both been ejected from this College World Series game in the bottom of the first inning. And Schnall has emphasized to us the most important coach that he has is Schilling at first base.

ā€œBoy I’ve never seen that before. The Coastal Carolina dugout is minus their first base coach, and more important than that, their head coach, with eight innings to play. … Backs already against the wall, and now you’re down two key personnel to help you guide you through this.ā€
