Starkville Police Department blames Ole Miss for Trinidad Chambliss jersey theft before Egg Bowl

Prior to Friday’s Egg Bowl between Mississippi State and Ole Miss, there was some off-field controversy that dominated headlines. A pair of fans allegedly broke into the Rebels’ locker room inside Starkville’s Davis Wade Stadium and stole quarterback Trinidad Chambliss‘ jersey.

After videos surfaced on social media and the outcry grew louder, the Starkville Police Department took to social media, and in a surprising twist, they put the blame on Ole Miss. Check out their post below, where they claimed the Rebels left their doors unlocked, providing photographic evidence.

“See things come up missing when you leave your doors unlocked,” the Starkville Police Department posted on X. “So take part in the 9pm routine and make sure your valuables don’t come up stolen!”

Alas, somebody from the Rebels side might’ve made a mistake, but it doesn’t change what went down. In the end, it didn’t hamper Ole Miss or Chambliss, who threw for 359 yards and four touchdowns in the 38-19 win Friday afternoon, likely securing No. 7 Ole Miss (11-1, 7-1 SEC) the program’s first-ever College Football Playoff appearance in the process.

Following the game, Chambliss admitted he initially found some humor in the prank, but also echoed Rebels coach Lane Kiffin‘s earlier comments and condemned it as “very disrespectful.”

“I thought it was kind of funny, but it’s very disrespectful, honestly,” Chambliss said postgame, according to On3’s Jake Thompson. “It kind of shows you what kind of school Mississippi State is. They’ve always had brawls and fights and whatnot. We can’t get too caught up in that, but that was very disrespectful.”

It appears like Ole Miss and Chambliss eventually recovered the stolen jersey, based on a postgame tweet from Ole Miss fan Tyler Jordan. Check it out below:

Earlier on Friday, Kiffin told ESPN’s Marty Smith about the early-morning heist on the SEC Network’s pregame show SEC This Morning.

“This will be a great game today. It’s a very passionate rivalry. I mean, shoot, at 10 p.m. last night, luckily our great (equipment manager) Ken Crain put secret cameras in the locker room so we could watch Mississippi State break into our locker room and steal things,” Kiffin told Smith.

“We reported it to Mississippi State and they said ‘We’ll put security on it.’ And how about this? At 3 am in the morning, they break in and take Trinidad (Chambliss)‘s jersey! Guess you can expect nothing less from these people.”
