Steve Spurrier offers his view of how Lane Kiffin should handle 'tricky situation' with his future
No coach in college football has more eyes on him than Lane Kiffin. Everyone is waiting to see his next move, seemingly having three finalists. Ole Miss is hoping to retain their head coach, while Florida and LSU are the two front-runners to hire him.
Nobody from the outside truly knows what is going on. Plenty have offered a viewpoint, though, including legendary head coach Steve Spurrier. His main point in the whole situation revolves around Kiffin remaining with Ole Miss for the rest of the season, no matter how far the Rebels go.
“Everybody is waiting to see what Lane Kiffin is going to do on Saturday after the Egg Bowl,” Spurrier said via Another Dooley Noted Podcast. “It’s Friday night, I think. So, he’ll have a lot of cameras on him for the Egg Bowl. It is a touchy situation… Lane Kiffin coming out and saying ‘Hey, I am going to coach this team until the season is over. If nobody wants to wait for me, I don’t care. I’m going to coach this season and finish it off. Because we started it.’
“… They’ve got possibly the best team in school history. Give him and that team a chance to finish out. And all the time, schedules, this, that, and the other — just wait until it’s all over. But they’re not doing it that way.”

Kiffin would be the first to tell you all focus is on winning the Egg Bowl. Ole Miss can finish the regular season with an 11-1 record and all but clinch a spot in the College Football Playoff. A trip to Atlanta for the SEC Championship even remains on the table, needing some serious help. Whether or not Kiffin will remain with the program is currently unknown.
If the decision from Kiffin does turn out to be Florida or LSU, and he does not coach in the CFP, it might hurt Ole Miss on Selection Sunday. On3’s Chris Low recently explained how the committee might take the change into account.
You have to imagine Spurrier is hoping Kiffin winds up picking Florida. The two have been linked from the moment Billy Napier was fired. However, LSU jumping into the equation changed things once Brian Kelly was let go. And no matter who emerges as the winner, Spurrier would prefer the process does not even get started before Ole Miss is finished playing games.
