Todd McShay hints at LaNorris Sellers staying in college, transferring to Miami

Everybody in Columbia would be quick to tell you things have not gone to plan in 2025. Mainly for quarterback LaNorris Sellers, who entered the year with Heisman Trophy and NFL Draft hopes. And while declaring is still an option, The Ringer‘s Todd McShay believes Sellers will return to school next season.
“There’s a strong opinion in NFL scouting circles,” McShay began via The McShay Show. “He will be back in school next year. That he absolutely needs to for his development to be ready when called upon as a first-round draft pick… Everyone is supporting the concept of he needs another year of college. There are people in his camp that are in agreement, from what I’m told.”
Now, the next part is where South Carolina fans might want to cover their ears. McShay believes there is a chance Sellers does not play for the Gamecocks if he decides to stay at the college level. A trip into the NCAA transfer portal would be followed by playing for Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes.
“I’m not here to say there’s collusion,” McShay said. “I promise you, no one said a word. But one person started putting the dots together. There is a place in South Florida where they’ve done a really nice job of hand-picking quarterbacks the last two years and they’ve seen ascensions in their game… Miami is a program I would be very cautious of if I’m Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks program of trying to come in with an offer that’s very difficult to refuse.”

McShay is referencing Cam Ward and Carson Beck, the latter of whom is still in Coral Gables. Ward transferred in from Washington State and had enough success to be picked with the No. 1 overall pick. Now, he is the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans, being forced into action right away. Exactly where Beck winds up going in the upcoming draft, we will have to wait and see.
Right now, Sellers is likely focusing on the three games in front of him. South Carolina does take a Week 11 bye before heading to College Station to face Texas A&M. From there, the entire SEC schedule has been played. Nonconference games against Coastal Carolina and arch-rival Clemson take place, both at home.
If nothing else, it’s something to watch once the offseason gets underway. McShay feels confident Sellers will remain in school but exactly where — South Carolina is hoping it’s with them.
