Trent Perry jumped to No. 38 in the recent 2024 On3 150 ranking update. The 6-foot-3 rising senior at Los Angeles (CA) Harvard Westlake is the No. 5 point guard in his class. He averaged 13.0 points, second on his team, during Nike’s Peach Jam, leading his Vegas Elite team to the final game.

“I’ve kept working, stayed in the gym,” Perry told On3. “I’ve been working on every little part of my game, staying consistent through it all. I watch a lot of Devin Booker, how he comes off pin-downs and creates his shot off-ball. Also, a lot of Damian Lillard, how he gets to his spots and is a threat to shoot it or pass it.”

On3 caught up with four-star Trent Perry after a recent live viewing to talk visits and dive into his recruitment.

Perry breaks down official visits

“I’ve taken four officials now, Vanderbilt, Colorado, St. Mary’s, and USC,” Perry said.

Southern California: “That visit was more about getting to know the school and how they act with the basketball team. Since USC is local, I know about the team, so that visit was much more about seeing how the program is run. They let Boogie Ellis go last year. I feel like if I were to choose USC, I would step into a similar role and show what I can do. I’ve seen first-hand that Coach (Andy) Enfield lets his guys play.

Vanderbilt: “My initial recruiter there, Adam Mazarei, left for Cal, so I’ve been talking with James Strong; he’s the new assistant there. They’ve always just been giving me constant information about the school, and they continue to let me know they really want me over there.”

Colorado: “It’s been really good with them. They’ve done a good job keeping in constant communication with me. Even before they offered, they kept in communication, telling me about the school. The visit was great, they showed me a lot of how they developed their players. Since the visit, they’ve just kept the dialogue growing.”

St. Mary’s: “It’s a smaller town up there, but they are all about basketball, which is cool. Coach (Randy) Bennett and the whole staff really talk to me and my parents a lot, like almost every day. The relationship is really good with them. I know Aidan Mahaney and Jordan Ross on that team, so it was good to be able just to ask them questions on the visit and everything.”

Perry talks potential visits

“I’m talking with Notre Dame and Virginia about potential visits,” Perry said.

Notre Dame: “It’s a new staff, but Coach (Micah) Shrewsberry coached in the NBA with the Celtics. They have an NBA-like offense where any guard on the floor can flourish. They run a lot of pick-and-rolls, and he knows what it takes for a guard to get to the NBA. I’ve got a great relationship with them, Coach (Kyle) Getter is always supportive of me; he is always checking in with how me and my family are doing.”

Virginia: “It’s Tony Bennett. He’s a legendary coach, honestly. He won a national championship, and he played in the league. Coach Bennett knows how to develop guards, guys like Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy. He’s also had west coast guys like London Perrantes and Kihei Clark. I have a great relationship with the staff, and it’s pretty comfortable knowing that they want West Coast kids, and they’ve been pretty successful there.”

At the end of the day…

“I don’t have any type of timeframe in mind for when I’m going to commit,” Trent Perry said. “I still have some calls lined up and some visits to take, so we’re kind of going with the flow right now. When I know where I want to go, I’ll know.

“The big pieces for me are going to be the style of play. How does the offense run, and will it be a system that grows and develops my game? I want to play in the NBA, so I want to go to a school and play for a coach that will showcase my game. What kind of relationship I’m able to develop with the coaches, not only the assistant coaches but the head coach too will play a role.”
