Trey McNutt injury update: Latest on Oregon five-star safety

Oregon freshman safety Trey McNutt has broken his right leg in fall training camp, sources tell On3. No clear timetable for a return has been set.
The five-star recruit in the 2025 cycle picked the Ducks over in-state Ohio State. The Shaker Heights (Ohio) product was the No. 26 recruit and the No. 2 safety in his class.
The 5-foot-11.5, 185-pound safety was expected to contribute as a true freshman this season. He was named one of Rivals’ Charles Power’s instant impact signees. A two-way playmaker at the high school level, he starred as a safety, corner and slot receiver. McNutt posted a pass breakup in Oregon’s spring game.
Oregon added Purdue safety Dillon Thieneman in the winter portal, and he’s expected to start for the Ducks this season. He will take on a larger role for Oregon with McNutt’s injury. Thieneman registered 211 tackles, 14 pass breakups, six interceptions and two forced fumbles in 24 starts at Purdue.
While the likes of Texas A&M, USC, Ohio State and Florida also pushing heavily in McNutt’s recruitment, it was Oregon that continued to stand above the rest. The program trajectory, relationships with the Ducks staff and potential for elite development all stood out heavily to McNutt as he came to his decision.

“They want to be great in that program,” Trey McNutt previously told On3’s Steve Wiltfong. “And the people around the program, they’re all great people and they all have the same goals and they’re all fighting to get to their goals.”
“Coach Lanning he’s a good coach and he’s different. He’s different than most college head coaches. Really Coach Lanning and I just connected and you can tell he’s going to be a big-time coach in the future.”
Oregon opens the 2025 season on Aug. 30 when it hosts Montana State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET. The Ducks debuted at No. 7 in the preseason AP Top 25 poll on Monday.
