The suspect involved in the alleged stabbing at UAB‘s Football Operations Center has been identified as Blazers offensive lineman Daniel Mincey. Mincey is in his first year with the program after transferring to UAB from Kentucky this offseason.

Mincey has been arrested, and was charged for aggravated assault and attempted murder. At least two victims have been transported to UAB Hospital, per Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. The university said in an initial statement that the injuries to the victims are considered to be ‘non-life threatening.’

Per Jefferson County Jail (Birmingham) records, Mincey was booked by University of Alabama Birmingham Campus Police officers and has since been transported to the Jefferson County Jail as a pretrial Inmate. He was booked at 12:40 p.m. local time.

The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. local time, according to WVTM-TV. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, and UAB Police is leading the investigation into the incident, according to AL.com.

“We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition,” the university said in an updated statement. “Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect – another player – remains in custody and an investigation is taking place.

“The team elected to play today’s game. UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”

Kickoff between UAB and USF is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET. The game is set to air on ESPN+.

The Blazers are 3-7 on the year (1-5, American) and have lost their last three matchups heading into the weekend. Their most recent matchup saw UAB fall to North Texas at home 53-24. They put up 478 yards on offense despite the loss, but turned the ball over four different times along the way.

The last time UAB emerged victorious was in the middle of October when they upset then No. 22 Memphis at home. The the win vs. the Tigers is the Blazers’ only victory since Sept. 13.

Amid the losing streak, UAB fired former head coach Trent Dilfer earlier this season after a 2-4 start. He finished his tenure with the program with a 9-21 record over two and a half seasons.

Alex Mortensen was named interim head coach after Dilfer was let go and has led UAB to a 1-3 record ever since. Mortensen was appointed the program’s offensive coordinator by Dilfer when he first took the job.
