UAB has released a statement on the stabbing incident at its football operations center. The school said a Blazers player is the suspect, and the team opted to go forward with Saturday’s game against USF.

Two UAB football players suffered injuries in the incident, which occurred Saturday morning. The school said the injuries were not considered life-threatening.

In a new statement Saturday afternoon, UAB said the two players are in stable condition. The university also confirmed the suspect is another football player, who is in custody as the investigation continues.

“We’re grateful to report that two players injured in an incident this morning at the Football Operations Building are in stable condition,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect – another player – remains in custody and an investigation is taking place.

“The team elected to play today’s game. UAB’s top priority remains the safety and well-being of all of our students. Given patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we have no further comment at this time.”

The incident occurred shortly after 10 a.m. local time, according to WVTM-TV. Birmingham Fire and Rescue responded to the scene, and UAB Police is leading the investigation into the incident, according to AL.com.

UAB has a 3-7 record on the year, including a 1-5 mark in American Conference play. The Blazers have lost their last three games heading into Week 13, most recently falling to North Texas, 53-24, at home. They put up 478 yards on offense despite the loss, but turned the ball over four different times along the way.

Saturday’s game is proving to be another key American matchup. USF is coming to town, hoping to stay alive in the conference race – though the Bulls will need some help after falling to Navy last week. Four teams, including the Midshipmen, sit tied for first place in the standings with two weeks left in the regular season.

UAB also underwent a coaching change this year after the school parted ways with Trent Dilfer. Alex Mortensen took the role and led the Blazers to a huge victory over Memphis in his first game as the interim head coach.

UAB and USF are set to square off Saturday afternoon in Birmingham. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
